I’ve worn a lot of hats. Grandpa is my favorite.
I’m Clemons S. Duncan: a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer, former Army helicopter pilot, Navy aircraft accident investigator, author, husband, and grandfather.
My writing began with a gift from my daughter Catherine: a book of questions about my life. I answered one question each week for a year. When those answers became a family book, my wife Laura encouraged me to keep writing.
Then came my grandchildren’s questions, conversations with young service members, and afternoons beside historic aircraft at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum.
The subjects grew. The purpose stayed the same: preserve something worth knowing and pass it on. Every book I write passes on something I’ve learned, so the next person doesn’t have to learn it the hard way.

For a young service member starting out
I was seventeen when I stepped off the bus at Fort Ord. Responsibility arrived before I felt ready for it.
The Professional Soldier’s Notebook passes on the lessons I wish someone had handed me then: protect your reputation, control your money, own your mistakes, and build trust through daily habits. Each chapter includes a rule, a scenario, and a seven-day challenge to put the lesson into practice.

I had spent my career preparing for emergencies. Yet the information my own family would need was scattered among files, accounts, and things only I knew.
I created The Veteran Family Command Book to put it together: first-hours guidance, document locations, military records, financial information, final wishes, and letters to the people I love.
When Laura and I sat down with it, there were tears. Then she hugged me and said, “Thank you for trying to handle the things you know I would not know how to.”
That is the purpose behind the book: helping your family face a difficult time with preparation and love.
For a curious young explorer
As a museum docent, I met hundreds of children. One six-year-old knew the Wright brothers’ flight records by heart—but hadn’t heard about their sister Katharine. His curiosity reminded me to teach the people behind the discoveries alongside the science.
