Each story in the Grandpa School lesson collection teaches a timeless lesson through warmth, wisdom, and real family moments.
The Night the Power Went Ou
The rain had started before dinner, soft at first, then heavier, drumming steadily on the roof like an old heartbeat. By the time the dishes were cleared, the living room was wrapped in gray dusk. Then it happened—click—the lights went out. The TV, the humming fridge, the little glowing clock on the microwave—all of it silenced at once. For a moment, nobody moved. My granddaughter Sofia looked up from her tablet, her face half-lit by the fading screen. “Grandpa,” she whispered, “what do we do now?”I smiled, struck a match, and let a candle come to life. Its small flame danced between us, casting golden light across her eyes. “We do what families used to do before electricity ruled the evening,” I said. “We tell stories.”At first, Sofia wasn’t sure what to think. She’d never experienced a night without glowing screens. I handed her another candle to hold while I searched through the old board games. She asked, “Did you have nights like this when you were little
The Day Giselle Asked If Grandchildren Were Good for Grandparents
Yes, grandchildren are remarkably good for grandparents. Research published in the journal Evolution and Human Behavior found that grandparents who spend regular, meaningful time with their grandchildren experience lower rates of depression and greater overall life satisfaction. But I didn’t need a study to know that. I knew it the moment Giselle asked the question. We were sitting on the porch, me with my coffee, her with her juice box, when she tilted her head and said, “Grandpa, are grandchildren good for grandparents?” I almost spilled my coffee. “Where did you hear that?” I asked. “Ms. Rivera said grandparents need us as much as we need them,” she said matter-of-factly. “Is that true?”I set my cup down and looked at her. “More than you know, sweetheart.”
The Bear Hug Tradition
It was one of those perfect Sunday afternoons when the aroma of roasted chicken filled the house, and sunlight poured across the kitchen floor. The type of day that truly feels like home. The front door swung open, and Sofia ran inside, backpack bouncing, curls flying, laughter leading the way. Before she could even shout “Grandpa!” I caught her mid-stride and wrapped her in one of our famous Bear Hugs , the kind that makes your ribs creak, your eyes pop, and your heart feel ten pounds lighter. She squealed, “Grandpa! You’re squishing me!”“That’s how you know it’s a real Bear Hug!” I said with a grin, giving one more good squeeze before setting her down.Grandma laughed from the kitchen. “In this house, hugs come with full strength and no refunds!”Sofia giggled and ran over to give Grandma another Bear Hug. The whole room seemed to fill with warmth — invisible threads of love pulling generations closer with each joyful squeeze..
