Introduction: The Pilot’s Control Center

The cockpit is where pilots sit to operate and steer the airplane.
It’s filled with screens, buttons, and instruments that provide all the information they need to fly safely.

Flight Facts: Inside the Cockpit

• Yoke or Stick – Assists in steering.
• Throttle – Controls engine power.
• Pedals – Use to control the rudder for turning.
• Altimeter – Indicates the airplane’s altitude.
• Airspeed Indicator – Displays flight speed.
• Navigation Displays – Map the sky and guide the route.
• Headsets – Allow pilots to communicate with air traffic control.

Try It Yourself!

Activity: “Build a Cardboard Cockpit”
You’ll need: a cardboard box, markers, and paper plates.

1. Draw buttons, levers, and dials on your box.
2. Use paper plates as pretend steering wheels.
3. Pretend you’re communicating with “Control Tower” using a toy headset.

Bonus: Add blinking lights using stickers or LEDs!
